If you did not complete the tasks from last week, you are falling behind. To see last week’s tasks, scroll down as you view the course blog. Stop scrolling when you see the title and date of that lab activity. Complete what is left and then begin these tasks.

This week, continue configuring your applications and review the responses for your recent quiz. 

If you are part of Mr.V’s tech experiment, use your device instead of a computer to do this. Those using iPod Touchs may prefer to use a desktop computer to enjoy the ease that comes from using a larger screen. 

1. Go to, and login to, the Drop Box account you set up.

• Create a new folder and label it using your Period # and full name. It should look like this: 7_SmithJohn 

  Of course, use you name and period number, not the information used in the example. Don’t forget to put an ‘Underscore’ between the number and your last name.

•  You should ‘share’ that folder with Mr.V. Do that by sending a sharing invitation to Mr.V’s email address. That address appears on the business card he gave you at the start of the school year.

• This folder will be the place that Mr.V will leave documents for you and you can leave documents for Mr.V.

• The Drop Box software should only be installed on the computer you have at home. If you have an iPod Touch, iPad, or Android Tablet there are free apps to install onto your device. Those apps are located in the App Store and Android Market, respectively and should be installed now if you haven’t done so yet.

2. Sign up for a Twitter account.

• Go to www.twitter.com and create a free account. Your Twitter profile name should be your full name. If you don’t use your full name Mr.V will not recognize your account as being yours.

• While still logged into Twitter, navigate to Mr.V’s Twitter profile @WorldHistReview (the @ symbol is Twitter’s way of identifying a Twitter profile).

• When you get to WorldHistReview, click on the ‘Follow’ button. Mr.V will similarly ‘Follow’ your profile. This linkage via Twitter will allow Mr.V to make announcements that will be distributed quickly.

• Twitter will become the dominant form of communication between you and Mr.V, not email. Email will be reserved for serious matters that require long, detailed messages. To contact Mr.V via twitter, you must send a ‘Direct Message’ when logged into your Twitter account. Direct Messages remain private. If you send a regular “tweet” to Mr.V, it will be visible to everyone. In some instances, a regular tweet is preferred over a Direct Message. For example, a regular tweet should be used if you want to ask Mr.V a question about an assignment or a topic discussed in class.

• If you have a cellphone with an unlimited texting plan, be sure to have twitter posts sent to it. This will permit you to receive the latest communications from Mr.V. IF YOU DON’T HAVE AN UNLIMITED TEXTING PLAN, DON’T COMPLETE THIS STEP.

• If you have an iPod Touch, iPad, or Android Tablet there are free apps to install onto your device. Those apps are located in the App Store and Android Market, respectively and should be installed now if you haven’t done so yet. The app is called “HootSuite”. This app is preferred over the standard Twitter app which is also available.

2b. For Android device users only! Socrative, the service we have been using to submit responses in class, has a free Android app. Download it from the Android Market. This will be more convenient than the way we’ve been following, which included using your device browser.

3. Setup a QuizStar Account.

• Go to http://quizstar.4teachers.org/servlet/registration and register for a free account.

• Once you have registered and created an account, you must search for Mr.V’s class. Within QuizStar, search for H1G. When you find it, register for the class. Mr.V will then approve your registration online.

•  This service will permit you to take practice exams as you prepare for your own in-class exams.

4.  Review the responses to the recent quiz administered in class. Discuss the correct choices with your neighbor and annotate your lesson materials to reflect it. A copy of the correct responses can be found at

5. If you don’t complete these tasks today, please do so before next Monday.

Given:

1. The computer in front of you may not function properly in all the ways we expect. Be prepared for this. If this occurs, find an unoccupied computer station or share the computer with your neighbor.
2. Any task not completed today should be completed, in a timely fashion, at home or using another computer in the school (this lab, another computer lab, library, Social Studies Department office, Mr.V’s work room, etc.).
3. You will need a flash drive during your academic career at Stuyvesant. If you don’t have one, please inform Mr.V and he will order a 4 GB drive for you at a cost of $5. Purchase of the device also helps support the integration of technology into Mr.V’s World History and Geography course for 9th graders at Stuyvesant HS.

Task:

1. Open the web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) and navigate to the course blog: http://worldhistreview.blogspot.com/.
2. After completing step 1, open another browser tab/ window and navigate to the Home page of the course website (www.worldhistoryreview.org). There, you’ll see a series of links at the bottom of the page. Click on “Resources” so that web page opens in another browser tab or window. You will now have three open tabs/ windows. This will permit you to toggle between them for certain tasks. This web page reveals an application known as Symbaloo. It contains links to the most important Internet sites we’ll use.
3. Using Symbaloo, click on the Engrade tile (link) and once there use the data Mr.V gave you to register for our course’s Engrade account. If you already have an Engrade account from Junior High School, login using that account’s credentials as you normally would. Then, use the code Mr.V gave you to gain access to our course account. After registering with Engrade, take a moment to look at the Course Calendar, which can be accessed via a side bar tab.
4. After completing step 3, go back to Symbaloo and click on the Dropbox tile. Sign up for a free account. If you prefer to use SugarSync, you can click on that tile instead of Dropbox. Either service is fine, free, and reputable. You shouldn’t sign up for both unless you need all that online storage.
5. After completing step 4, return to Symbaloo and click on the Mindmeister tile. Sign up for a free (BASIC) account. If your browser isn’t showing a link to signup for a BASIC account, use your neighbor’s computer. If that does not work, wait ’till you get home and do it using your computer.
6. If no one needs to use your computer, and you have finished steps 1 – 6, close all browser windows and logoff. You should then see the same window on your monitor screen that was displayed when you sat in front of the computer for the first time.
