Mr.V
If one hopes to make a living from the ‘pen’, communicating thoughts clearly to readers is a must. I intend to introduce the basics of academic writing through the assignments that are completed at home. Therefore, these assignments will serve a dual purpose; to build up your foundational knowledge of the subject, and practice formatting academic papers.
At the bottom is a template showing how the assignments should be formatted. Margin and line spacings are indicated on the template as well as the proper placement of content (admin data, title, etc.).
Though mentioned in the template, it’s worth mentioning here; the spacings indicated on the template are specific to the assignments you’re completing at home. To conform fully with the Modern Language Association (MLA) standard, academic papers must be entirely double line spaced. In addition, papers exceeding one page in length require a properly formatted page number in the upper-right corner. When we begin writing academic papers we’ll revisit these last two formatting rules.
Finally, if you decide to continue handwriting the assignments, you’ll still need to format the assignment in accordance with the template.
As first-year students at Stuyvesant High School, your notebook will be a key instrument in your success. You don’t realize yet that in those high-pressure, mentally fatiguing periods of the semester the three-ring binder you take for granted will help you survive and shine.
To make sure you develop sound note taking and organizational habits, Mr.V will collect your notebook without warning and offer his evaluation. This is how you should setup and maintain the notebook in preparation for its evaluation.
Your notebook should have two sections:
1. Lesson notes, Handouts, Class activities.
2. Assignments
A three-ring binder is the recommended notebook type.
There must be a cover sheet displaying the student’s full name and period number affixed to the notebook cover. Or, that sheet can be the first page after (inside) the front cover.
Lesson notes must show annotations (which are done outside of class prior to that lesson being covered in class). Classroom notes compiled during discussions should also accompany the lesson notes.
Assignments can be typed or handwritten, but must always conform with the Modern Language Association (MLA) standard as described and explained by Mr.V in class. A template is being prepared for students to refer to. Handwritten assignments should be in blue/ black ink.
Notebook materials should be maintained within the notebook and not removed. Mr.V will ask for a student’s notebook just prior to the end of a class session. The student is expected to submit the notebook (excluding all materials from other subject classes) and expect it to be returned and evaluated within two class sessions. A student may have his/ her notebook evaluated multiple times if earlier evaluations indicated that improvement was necessary.
If time and circumstances permit, all students will have their notebook evaluated. That evaluation will fall within the category of preparedness.
