If one studies history, they can quickly realize the importance of fresh water as concretely as a doctor, who recognizes the biological need.
Historians, however, have a wider view of human dependence. Surely, if we don’t have fresh water we’ll die. Add to that the historical expansion of the need; without fresh water our civilizations will die. Our culture will die. Look at places in our world where freah water resources have been depleted. These areas, perhaps the seat of great societies in the past, are now reliquaries of better times long gone. The US has been blessed with vast fresh water resources. Our poor stewardship has placed us on a developmental path that will ultimately lead to the same fate as those deceased societies. This article should wake many of us from our stupor. At least I hope so.
